Voyager Estate SSB travels well

Quality finish: the Voyager Estate vineyard team. Quality finish: the Voyager Estate vineyard team.

IN any given year, there are one or two standouts among the 100 or so West Australian unwooded semillon and sauvignon blanc blends.

Recently, and for the second time, the Voyager Estate Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2009 has been clearly the finest in a major tasting of WA’s finest semillon sauvignon blancs.

This blend is so important to this State’s wine culture that it is worth quoting the previous tasting’s result.

“This (Voyager Estate 2009) topped a recent 21-wine line-up of unwooded semillon sauvignon blancs, where it was the highest pointed wine by a significant margin.

This is a crowd pleaser. The fruit is big, placid and beautifully balanced. The wonderfully fresh acidity along the fruit’s edges lingers through the considerable length and into the finish and aftertaste.

If you are looking for a full, soft, fresh, zesty and slightly sweet crowd pleasing mouthful of SSB – then this is not for you! This Voyager blend, even at 16 months of age, is bracingly dry and crisp throughout its classic style and length.”

While WA has some marvellous unwooded SSB blends that sell at under $10, there is still a significant quality gulf between the best of those and the best wines of each vintage.

This is our selection as the best unwooded WA SSB blend from the 2009 vintage. It is a classic of the style and it will drink marvellously over the next 18 months.
