Taking the garden path to award

A CHANGE in career two years ago led Perth resident Alicia Ferrer into the landscape design industry.

She is now one of eight finalists and the only West Australian to be nominated in the Flemings Student Design competition in the Melbourne International Flower and Garden show.

The Tafe graduate chose to study Landscape Design and Horticulture because she wanted to give her former career in interior design ‘a twist’ and expand her creative horizons.

The competition required horticulture or design students to submit a design brief of a garden.

Alicia said her garden was designed to be enjoyed primarily at ‘seat level.’

“A table with eight stools surrounded by soft planting at a low level allows space flow around the seating area rather than feeling constrained by boundaries too early, ” she said.

She intends to start trading independently as Kokatu Design early this year.

“I want to focus on cutting edge environmentally friendly landscape design to contribute to minimising human impact in our world,” she said.

The winner of the Flemings Design Student competition will receive the Don Fleming Student Award and a $5000 cash prize. The winner will be announced at a special event in Melbourne in April.
