STUDENTS from Helena College Junior School in Darlington have joined in the fun of the Active After-School Communities program this term.

Physical education teacher Anthony Fazioli registered the school with the AASC program to provide opportunities for both lower and upper primary school students to become involved in after school physical activity.

The program has commenced with Tai Chi – a Chinese western martial art. Under the coaching of Moshan Ranasooriya students have learnt motions including the tiger, monkey, horse, crane, bird, rooster, snake and tree.

“It has been great to work with the students and help promote a positive image of Tai Chi while also providing them skills that they can use for the rest of their lives,” Mr Fazioli said.

“The Active After-School Program has provided students with an opportunity to trial sports with their peers before they go on to join clubs.

“If we can get more inactive students active we have achieved our goal. The students and staff at Helena have fully embraced the program and we all feel very fortunate to be receiving the grant.”

Helena College students will also commence cricket shortly before embarking upon the Olympic sport of fencing in the early part of term two.

The Active After-school Communities Program runs across Australia. Contact Swan East Regional Co-ordinator Mark Sanders on 0437 700 440 for information.
